Pronghorn Antelope Statues and Gifts

Like other even-toed hoofed animals, pronghorns chew cud—their own partially digested food. The meal of choice for this speedy herbivore is generally grass, sagebrush, and other vegetation.

Pronghorns mate each fall in the dry, open lands of western North America. Bucks gather harems of females and protect them jealously—sometimes battling rivals in spectacular and dangerous fights. In the spring, females give birth to one or two young, which can outrun a human after just a few days.

Pronghorns are hunted throughout much of their natural range, but some subspecies are endangered.

Diet
Pronghorns live primarily in grasslands but also in brushland and deserts. They eat a wide variety of plant foods, often including plants that are unpalatable or toxic to domestic livestock (sheep and cattle) though they also compete with these for food. In one study forbs comprised 62% of the diet, shrubs 23%, and grasses 15%,[4] while in another, cacti comprised 40%, grass 22%, forbs 20%, and shrubs 18%.

Reproductive ecology
Pronghorns have a gestation period of 235 days, longer than is typical for North American ungulates. They breed in mid-September, and the doe carries her fawn until late May. This is around six weeks longer than the White-tailed Deer. Newborn Pronghorns weigh 2–4 kg, most commonly 3 kg. Sexual maturity is reached at 15 to 16 months, though males rarely breed until 3 years old. The longevity is typically up to 10 years, rarely 15 years(Wikipedia).

* The antelope is the fastest land mammal in the world, with sprinting capabilities as fast as 60 mph and sustained speeds of 30 mph for miles! Although the African Cheetah is often credited with being the fastest, it is only a sprinter with endurance of a few hundred yards. No other land mammal can keep up with the pronghorn antelope over a long distance.

* The eyes of an antelope are nothing short of exceptional. They can pick up movement as far as three miles away. The eyes are located far back on the head so they can keep watch even while the head is down during feeding. Since the prairie offers little cover in which to hide, it needs to be able to outrun any predators that manage to sneak within striking range.

* Pronghorn antelope will flare out the white hairs on their rumps when alarmed, serving as warning to the other members of the herd.

* Antelope are not jumpers. When it encounters a fence an antelope will usually crawl under it! They seldom jump over one.

* The horn sheath of the antelope is shed annually. It is neither solely an antler nor horn, but part both.

* About 40% of the females have horns, but they don't get any longer than their ears and never fork(runwyoming.com).
